Distinguished Lecture Series

Sponsored by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the Distinguished Lecture Series is designed to introduce students to outstanding scientific and mathematical research by inviting leading researchers to speak to the COSMOS community. 2009 speakers will be announced in May.

College Info Day

COSMOS invites representatives from top universities such as Stanford, Harvey Mudd, Caltech, and UCs to present admissions information to students. Representatives will answer questions, provide admissions literature and discuss eligibility requirements. Parents are invited to attend.

Science Buddies

A representative from Science Buddies, an online non-profit organization that “…provides free science fair project ideas, answers, and tools to teachers, parents, and students…[and] aspires to improve project quality and increase science fair participation…”, will give a presentation to all interested COSMOS students. The session is optional, but strongly recommended particularly for those students who intend to submit an Intel Science Fair grant proposal at the end of COSMOS.

Intel Independent Research Award

The Intel Corporation will generously donate funds to inspire COSMOS students to participate in regional, national or international science fairs. Each 2009 COSMOS student is invited to submit a one page proposal for a science fair project to be completed in the 2009-10 academic year.

As well as inspiration, the awards are intended to provide practical support for the projects, including equipment costs, entry fees and travel expenses. A budget for the project is not required. Winners will be asked to submit a more detailed final project description as well as the results of the science fair in which they participated once the fair has concluded.

Star Party

COSMOS faculty, Paul Feldstein, generously coordinates a small army of volunteers and will secure several high powered telescopes which will be staged in Shields Grove at the West end of the UC Davis Arboretum. All COSMOS students were invited to attend the Friday night event to view stars, planets and galaxies not seen by the naked eye.
